Alternative Energy: Shaping Our Society’s Future
SciTech Hosts USC Science Week 2011
This highly anticipated event, originally carded for February of this year, came to fruition during the week of October 17 – 21. Among the activities planned for the week were: a science parade, an assembly session, displays, and a grand show and exhibition that culminated the week of events.
The week kicked off with a flamboyant and energetic campus parade which ended in front the auditorium stairs. Curious onlookers, who included faculty, staff and students, enjoyed the scenery and the enthusiasm of the bunch.
Quoting Albert Einstein, Dr. Austin Pope, Chair of the Chemistry Department said that “Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them,” and so showed the importance of generating innovative solutions, and the need for us to begin using our available alternative sources of energy.
The week’s activities continued with a mini zoo display at the front of the School of Sciences and Technology building. Animals such as iguanas, fishes of all kinds, caimans, and snakes graced the campus. Students and staff came to visit the mini zoo and were at various points of the day given a tour and had their questions answered. The week of events culminated on Thursday the 21st with a display of science projects that had been prepared by students of the various departments in the School of Sciences and Technology.
The displays showed the alternative energy options available to us in Trinidad and Tobago, and by extension the region, and how these can be used in the coming years to help make our society and region a better one for future generations.
