USC's First Choral Festival

Kerron Hislop/USC

The USC Music Program brought the curtains down on a packed musical calendar for 2016-2017 with its first ever Choral Festival Weekend from April 21st - 22nd. Beginning with our Spring Choral Concert on Friday evening, the weekend was packed with exciting events from start to finish. Friday's vespers featured ministry by the HIS LUV Chorale, Evangelic Praise (the USC Music Program's newest small group) and the USC debut of our newest ensemble - the University Choir and Orchestra (UCO).  Praises rose to the heavens as the UCO rendered items from its spring repertoire - a mix of traditional and contemporary works - bringing a fresh new sound to the campus and the region that is sure to inspire for years to come as the ensemble advances.

Mr. Kerron Hislop, Coordinator of USC Music
Sabbath morning was music day at the University Church and featured presentations by Friday night's groups as well as the Music Program's many other ensembles including the University Ringers, USC Flute Quartet, USC Saxophone Quartet, USC Concert Band and the USC Steel Orchestra.
The weekend's proceedings culminated with the USC Choral Festival which featured 8 of Trinidad's best SDA choral groups - The Barataria Youth Choir, CT Singers, D'Abadie Chorale, Diego Martin Youth Choir, Laventille Youth Chorale, Praisetissimo Chorale as well as the University's own HIS LUV and University Choral (who did not compete being the event's hosts). Each group was required to present a piece of choice as well as the test piece - God and God Alone.  After a series of fantastic performances, the Barataria Youth Chorale was judged the overall winner of the event with the CT Singers and Praisetissimo Chorale taking the second and third places respectively.

At the end, a huge 300-plus voice mass choir united to sing the test piece - God and God alone under the direction of our visiting facilitator and clinician Dr. Earl Richards II, bringing an end to a fantastic weekend.
USC Music continues to make tremendous strides as it seeks to build and expand enrollment, ensemble participation and the scope of its service to the institution and the wider community.
