President & Vice-President Announce Improvements to the Work-Study Programme

In his remarks at the Student Worker Achievement of the Year Award Ceremony (SWAY Awards) on April 23, University President, Dr. Hillary Bowman announced upcoming improvements to the work-study programme alongside increased work opportunities for students. Over the next two weeks, Dr. Bowman said students will have an opportunity to sign up for work on the new female dormitory with wages being higher than is customary in any given semester.

Dr. Bowman furthermore announced that priority will be given to students willing to work on projects that would have previously been outsourced. The important factor should be that the University is receiving value for money.

He spoke highly of the student workers and congratulated them for the quality of work they put out, mentioning that the work ethic they develop at USC will be carried into the workplace when they leave.

According to Pastor Onesi La Fleur, Vice President of Student Services and Enrolment Management, in various reviews of the Work-Study programme, “the University has noted the significant contributions students make to the running of the University and will continue to find ways to strengthen the programme.”

At the end of the night, two students were bestowed the Mr. and Ms. Professional Student Worker Award. They are, Mr. Johann Andrews, assigned to the School of Business, and Ms. Mercedes Campbell Student Worker in the Office of the Distance Education.

USC’s Work-Study programme has been in existence since the 1920’s and provides for students an opportunity to develop holistically.
