CARISCIENCE, a UNESCO affiliated St. Augustine Campus based organization, jointly with the German Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of the West Indies, the University of Trinidad and Tobago and the University of the Southern Caribbean are pleased to announce the launching of the Annual CARISCIENCE Nobel Laureate Lecture Series. This series will be inaugurated with a Public Lecture by the 2010 Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry, Professor Ei-ichi Negishi, at the Learning Resource Centre Auditorium of the St. Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies, on Thursday 22nd September, 2016 at 5.30pm.

Professor Ei-ichi Negishi, an H. C. Brown Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Purdue University, grew up in Japan and received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Tokyo in 1958. During the period 1958-1966, while working as a Research Chemist at Teijin, Ltd., Japan, he spent 3 years as a Fulbright-Smith-Mund Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania where he obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry.  In 1972, Negishi went to Syracuse University as Assistant Professor and began his life-long investigations of transition metal-catalyzed organometallic reactions for organic synthesis. He was invited back to Purdue University as Full Professor in 1979.  Professor Negishi is the recipient of many awards including an Alexander von Humboldt Senior Research Award in Germany during the period 1998 – 2001, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Japanese Order of Culture and of course, the Chemistry Nobel Prize in 2010.  He is best known for the discovery of the so-called “Negishi Coupling”.

In his presentation titled: “Pursuit of Many Lofty Dreams with Eternal Optimism over Half-a-Century”, Professor Negishi will share his passion for Chemistry and the pathways its study has led.
