English Department promotes Literacy in the Community
On Wednesday, January 11, 2012 the Department of Language and Communication of the University of the Southern Caribbean donated scores of children’s books to the Maracas SDA primary school. Resultantly, it has realised one of its major projects, which aims at promoting and encouraging literacy in the Maracas community.

Under the theme, “Reading is fundamental,” it launched a book donation drive in September, 2011 to offer books to children in the Maracas Community. USC’s Language and Communication teachers asked their students to donate at least one book to a primary school pupil. This was their own initiative to positively impact the community. And it was a resounding success, as students enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to donate at least one book. Collectively, over two hundred books were donated.
The principal of the Maracas SDA primary school, Charmaine Jardine-Brisbane, expressed her gratitude for the contribution by Language and Communication. of She said the books were needed and would be promptly used in creating libraries in each classroom, since the school does not have a librarian.
