Programme Entry Requirements

Matriculation Requirements:

Applicants must satisfy University entry requirements and pass Department auditions (Theory Placement Exam and the practical audition). Status as an undergraduate major is provisional until the student demonstrates academic and performance skills at an acceptable level–i.e., Gr. 5 theory and Gr. 5 practical skills on the primary instrument.

Pre-requisite for emphasis in Music Education:

  • Grade 5 certificate (Theory) and Grade 5 (Practical) in the primary instrument from the Associate Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) or Trinity-Guildhall (London), or other recognized music schools. All applicants are required to take a practical audition on their intended primary instrument, and the Music Theory and Aural Skills Placement Test. A minimum grade of B is required on each examination component for admittance into the identified Undergraduate Music Programmes

Deficiencies in musical background will require the student to complete the preliminary music courses in:

    • Music Theory – MUCT 103 Music Foundations I (3cr), MUCT 104 Music Foundations II (3cr) AND MUCT 105 Aurals I (1cr), MUCT 106 Aurals II (1cr)
    • Applied Lessons in the primary instrument MUPF 170/164 (2 cr)
    • Piano MUPF111/112/113/114, Piano Proficiency I-IV (2cr)

Upon successful completion of these courses and the fulfillment of the practical audition requirements, the department will recommend the student’s application for admission into the appropriate programme. The student will submit the emphasis declaration form to the records office.
